We recently rediscovered the love of quiet luxury and Carolyn Bessette's style through Netflix’s Love Story, and it is completely clear why that effortless aesthetic remains so utterly captivating. There is something deeply magnetic about a woman who has mastered the art of the intentional silhouette, someone who bypasses passing trends in favor of curating an authentic, timeless life of style.
But for me, that ultimate style inspiration didn't come from a television screen or a historic fashion icon. It was always much closer to home. It was my Babcia (Grandmother), Danuta Teresa.
Not Just a Style Trailblazer
Growing up, she was universally known as "the stylish one" in our family. But her style was never superficial, it was a reflection of her fierce independence and intellect.
Back in the 1950s, Dana was a true trailblazer, becoming one of the very first women in Western Australia to obtain a university teaching degree after being married - something which was just "not done" at the time. What makes that milestone even more incredible is that she did it all while already raising young children.
Stepping into the professional workforce during that era was no small feat. She understood implicitly that dressing with deliberate confidence was a powerful tool to command the respect she deserved in a male-dominated environment. Her choice of clothing and, crucially, her accessories reflected that strategic mindset. They were polished, sharp, and chosen with immense purpose.
She fundamentally understood a truth that sits at the very heart of Alf: true sophistication isn’t about excess, it’s an architectural armor that helps you navigate your world with confidence.
A Lesson in Living with Style
As a dedicated teacher, her days were a non-stop balancing act. She navigated the rigor of the classroom, managed a demanding commute, and carried a never-ending stream of marking, lesson plans, and daily essentials.
She needed to carry a significant amount back and forth just to get through her day, yet her accessories always rose to the occasion. She never once let the weight of her responsibilities compromise her innate sense of refined grace. She knew that form and function had to live together seamlessly.
From Legacy to Leather
It was exactly this blend of professional utility, historical grit, and refined grace that inspired our namesake piece, the Teresa Tote.
When I sat down to design this bag, my goal was to capture her incredible ability to remain perfectly organised on the inside while looking entirely elevated on the outside. The Teresa wasn’t built just to be a vessel for your laptop, planners, and daily "must-haves" it was thoughtfully engineered to completely elevate the physical act of carrying them.
Handcrafted from our signature premium pebbled leather, the Teresa is my personal tribute to a woman who proved that a busy, multi-faceted life (even until her last moments) is never an excuse to be anything less than chic.
